SUMMARY:WINGS & Climate Film Festival Present: A Special Screening
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to invite you to a private\, sneak peek screening of a new documentary by an award-winning filmmaker. This film chronicles the extraordinary journey of Dr. Samantha Monier\, a charismatic field biologist who leads a groundbreaking research expedition to the remote island of South Georgia. \nThe film highlights the extreme discoveries made by Dr. Monier and her team as they uncover the secrets of the polar region’s majestic wildlife. Through her eyes\, we witness the dedication\, passion\, and resilience of those who are not only exploring but also working to preserve our planet’s most fragile ecosystems. \nThe film offers a refreshingly unconventional take on the nature documentary genre\, emphasizing the critical role of women in pushing the boundaries of scientific discovery. \nThe evening kicks off with an open bar happy hour on the terrace at 22 Vanderbilt and the film will begin at 7pm. Following the screening\, there will be a panel Q&A with the film’s director and lead expeditionist\, Dr. Samantha Monier\, moderated by WINGS Associate Board members and co-hosts Frankie deGruy and Caroline Williams. \nThis event is dedicated to supporting WINGS mission of uplifting women in exploration and cutting-edge discoveries\, as well as New York City’s first film festival dedicated to climate. \nWe can’t wait to see you!

TOM creates virtual environments and interactive narrative experiences that extend this inspiration beyond a physical expedition\, to provide a place for past explorers to revisit and share stories\, for potential explorers to taste the possibilities\, and for those who cannot travel to these places\, the chance to enjoy the next best thing. \nJoin Otters Louise Edwards (Lead Developer and Science Consultant) and Tiffany Duong (Story Producer) as they share how\, after meeting on a WINGS expedition to Arctic Norway (carrying Flag #32)\, they turned their shared passions for ocean conservation into their first VR game. Based on their expedition\, the multi-award-winning Found in the Fjords follows a young female orca learning how to survive and thrive in a changing ocean. During a live playthrough\, they will describe how\, through its creation\, they developed an innovative way to enhance exploration that can amplify the reach and impact of any global environmental cause. \nTOM is excited to also share an exclusive first look at their new explorable Antarctic prototype with the WINGS community. In February 2024\, they once again proudly carried the same WINGS Flag #32 as part of a Citizen Science Expedition to the southern continent to research their sophomore project\, Stories of the Southern Seas. This anthology of immersive mini-games will transport players into the minds and bodies of the Antarctic Peninsula’s fascinating inhabitants\, send them back in time to discover the history of Antarctic science and exploration\, and much much more. \nAt lunch\, visit TOM at their booth where you can don a VR headset and venture to far off lands\, discuss opportunities to collaborate\, and create your own digital avatar. \nClick here to register \nCheck out the 2023 Global Explorers Forum here

SUMMARY:Living with Giants: Gorongosa Elephants’ Recovery and Challenges
DESCRIPTION:2023 WINGS Flag Carrier Dr. Dominique Gonçalves is a Mozambican ecologist who manages the Gorongosa Elephant Ecology Project in Gorongosa National Park\, Mozambique. She conducts a long-term monitoring of Gorongosa’s recovering elephant population looking on their habitat choices and its implications on human elephant conflict and coexistence. WINGS supported a critical component of Dominique’s assessment and monitoring of elephant populations in the Gorongosa National Park-Zambezi sector: the 99 active cameras distributed along the areas of high probability of elephants occurrence. \nDominique’s work is a holistic blend of ecology\, behaviour and conservation\, and focus on build coexistence between communities and elephants throughout a shared landscape. A passionate advocate of girls’ education to prevent early marriage\, Gonçalves also supports the park’s Girls’ Club program through the role models initiative. Dominique has an M.Sc. in Conservation Biology and a Ph.D. in Biodiversity Management from the University of Kent’s Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology. Dominique was the narrator of award-winning film called “Our Gorongosa: a Park for the People”. She is a National Geographic Society Explorer and have featured in National Geographic Channel’s “Women of Impact” film. In 2020\, she was nominated for the Pritzker Genius Award Prize\, and she was one of the Explorers Club 50 people changing the world in 2021 and the Explorer’s Club New Explorer Awardee of 2023. In 2024 she was awarded the DICE-University of Kent’s Mike Walkey prize for best postgraduate student\, and she is currently one of the Princeton University Presidential Postdoctoral Fellows. \nHer talk\, “Living with Giants: Gorongosa Elephants’ Recovery and Challenges” will take you through the fall and recovery of the elephant population\, and its impacts in the social- ecological system of one of the most successful restoration efforts in Africa.
