WINGS Fellow Anna Cummins reports from Iceland on her latest expedition with the 5 Gyres Institute!  Led by 5 Gyre staff, a crew of 13 professional sailors, scientists, advocates, artists, filmmakers, photographers, and journalists arrived in Reykjavik, Iceland after a 3 week plastic pollution research expedition.  Their preliminary findings are extremely concerning :

“Microplastic particles were present in every surface sample collected across 2500 nautical miles from Bermuda to Iceland – as well as evidence of microplastics below the surface – an area of plastic pollution science that is still largely unknown.”

In accordance with the 5 Gyres mission to engage citizens in a global movement to end the flow of plastics into the world’s oceans, they offered a unique opportunity to the public to join the crew and witness firsthand how plastics are impacting marine life.
